Dale Hollow Dam Spillway - May 12, 2009
by admin on May.12, 2009, under Uncategorized
We sometimes forget the power of nature and the power of man’s ingenuity. Those two powers came into focus to me this afternoon on a trip to see the six spillways of Dale Hollow Dam open as water rushed over into the bed of the Obey River just north of Celina. Everything from the foaming currents in the river, the large fish careening over the dam, to the constant roar reminds me that Dale Hollow Lake is massive and powerful. I’m likewise impressed by the capacity of man to harness nature’s power to prevent flooding and produce electricity. What a combination.
Amy, Will, and I, along with our good friend Melissa White, met up at Clay County High School after dismissal and made our way up to see what all the buzz in town was about. (Of course, we took in a peach smoothie at the Ju Ju Bean first.) All six spillways have not been opened like this, our sources tell us, for more than 20 years. It’s such an amazing sight that Will’s class is going via bus tomorrow to see it. I imagine his memories of this event will be preserved for a lifetime, as fresh and crisp as the pages in a favorite book.
We spent a few hours admiring, hiking, photographing, and taking in the experience itself. We drove on the road over the dam and got some excellent photos from just about every vantage point. As dusk fell, we drove by Donaldson Park and watched the foaming currents of the Obey meander toward the Cumberland.
I hope you enjoy the photo album and video clips I’m posting tonight.

We photographed a beautiful wedding today. Megan Woods and Elliott Brown were married at the Mt. Gilead Church of Christ with a reception at Joe Harrison Carter Elementary in Tompkinsville, KY.
Everything was beautiful as you’ll see as more photos are posted. Her bridals are some of my favorite shots ever!
